Three elements define it. A timeline sorts a patient’s history into antecedents (predispositions), triggers (what changed), and mediators (what sustains it). A systems map places symptoms across seven interconnected nodes rather than by organ specialty. And lifestyle factors — sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, relationships — are treated as clinical variables rather than background.

The most cited study is a retrospective cohort analysis from the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, published in JAMA Network Open in 2019, comparing patients treated in the functional medicine center with matched primary care patients at the same institution (Beidelschies et al., 2019). Functional medicine patients showed larger improvements in PROMIS Global Physical Health scores at six months.

Who actually regulates this
Functional medicine itself is not regulated, because it is a method rather than a profession. What is regulated is the clinician. In Texas, physicians and the delegation of medical acts fall under the Texas Medical Board, and advanced practice registered nurses are licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing. Both maintain public license-verification databases, and both accept complaints. A functional medicine clinician who diagnoses negligently is answerable to the same board as any other clinician holding that license.
IFM Certified Practitioner status sits on top of that license. It requires an existing clinical license, a defined coursework sequence, and a case-based examination. It is a meaningful signal of training, but it grants no authority of its own and does not expand scope. Laboratory testing is separately governed: assays run in CLIA-certified laboratories are regulated for analytical quality, which is a statement about whether the measurement is accurate, not about whether the result means what a practitioner claims. How to vet a provider in ten minutes
Apply this to any practice you are considering, including this one.
- Verify the license. Look the clinician up in the state board database. Confirm the license is active and the name matches.
- Check the functional medicine training. IFM maintains a practitioner directory. If the site claims certification, confirm it.
- Read how the site talks about conventional medicine. Coordination is a good sign. Contempt is not.
- Look for hedged language. "May contribute to," "associated with," and "we would test for" indicate clinical thinking. "Root cause of all disease" indicates copywriting.
- Ask what testing is included and what it costs. A practice that cannot answer before you book is a practice that will surprise you afterwards.
- Ask whether supplements are sold in-house. The answer does not have to be no. It has to be disclosed.
- Ask what happens if the plan does not work. The right answer names a reassessment point and a referral pathway.
- Check for an outcomes or guarantee claim. Guarantees in medicine are a warning, not a reassurance.

What tends to move first is sleep and energy, sometimes within four to eight weeks. Hormonal patterns usually need two to three cycles before a change is interpretable. Autoimmune and gut presentations are slower and are generally assessed across the full arc. When functional medicine is the right fit
The model is a reasonable option when symptoms have persisted for months, cross more than one body system, have been screened conventionally without explanation, and are the kind that respond to sleep, nutrition, movement, and stress physiology. What conditions has functional medicine been studied in?
The Cleveland Clinic cohort covered a general chronic-disease population rather than a single condition, which is part of why interpretation is difficult.
